Tanzanite Information

All About The Tanzanite Gemstone And Caring For Tanzanite Jewelry

The jewelry industry was transformed by the discovery of some exotic gemstones in the 1960's. Many of these gorgeous gemstones were found in East Africa. The introduction of the Tanzanite gemstone in 1969 had a massive impact on the gemstone world. The rare occurence of the Tanzanite gemstone, coupled with the very harsh environment in which it is mined, have kept the price levels of good quality Tanzanite relatively high.

Tanzanite Gemstone, General Information
In technical terms the Tanzanite gemstone is a Zoisite. For those of you who are technically inclined, the Tanzanite gem stone is scientifically, Calcium Aluminium Silicate Hydroxide. With a hardness degree of 6.5-7 on the Moh's scale of hardness, Tanzanite gems are quite hard. The Tanzanite gemstone has a color that ranges from various shades of blue to blue lavender.

Tanzanite is mainly mined in Tanzania and that was the reason why this blue zoisite was given the name Tanzanite. The major deposits of the Tanzanite gemstone are found in the Merelani Hills of Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania). It was the jeweller Tiffany and Company that named the Tanzanite gemstone. Clever marketing soon made the gemstone a hot favourite with jewelry designers and jewelry lovers.

More Important Information On Tanzanite Gem Stones
(1) Rough Tanzanite in it's natural form, is most often brownish in color. The gemstone is heat treated to bring out the stunning blue and purple shades. It is therefore quite safe to presume that all tanzanite gemstones are heat treated.

(2) Color information regarding the Tanzanite gemstone will show that the gemstone varies in shades between ultramarine blue and purple. However the most valuable Tanzanite gemstones are bluish in color with a shimmering purple hue around the blue. Such high quality Tanzanite gemstones are quite expensive especially, in sizes beyond 1 carat.

(3) Tanzanite in different color shades is often mistaken for blue sapphire and iolite. These gemstones are distinctly different, sapphires are normally more heavily included as compared to Tanzanite. Iolite has a more flattish color and does not exhibit the color brilliance that is apparent with Tanzanite. Both Iolite and Sapphires are popular gemstones in their own right and have a history that dates back far beyond Tanzanite.

(4) The same Tanzanite gemstone could exhibit a change in color when exposed to different sources of light. For example, natural light from an overcast sky can result in the Tanzanite gemstone showing more of blue shades. This is something that you need to be aware of.

(5) Lastly, because of the spectacular color of the Tanzanite gemstone in almost all shades of blue and purple, concentrate on getting a clean and clear gemstone that is eye clean with no inclusions and cracks. It is better to spend your money on a Tanzanite gemstone that is clear and clean, with high overtones of purple, rather than pay a high price for a dominantly blue color Tanzanite that has many inclusions.

Looking After Tanzanite Rings And Other Tanzanite Jewelry
Do not wear Tanzanite rings and other Tanzanite gemstone jewelry when doing a lot of physical activity. The gemstone needs to be protected from sharp impact and you would do good to take off your Tanzanite jewelry when doing active physical work.

Never wash your Tanzanite ring or other Tanzanite jewelry in an ultrasonic cleaner. Pay more attention to keeping your Tanzanite jewelry clean, rather than wearing it very often and looking for ways to clean it.

If you should ever need to repair your Tanzanite jewelry or do a resize on your Tanzanite gemstone ring, make sure that the gemstone is taken off the mounting before do the repair or other modification. The heat from the torch could destroy your gemstone.

Tanzanite Instead Of Blue Sapphire?
Very high grade Tanzanite gemstones have a strong blue accent and this makes them appear almost like premium grade blue sapphires. The price of these high grade Tanzanite gems would be much less than the price of high quality blue sapphires. Ofcourse, neither Tanzanite nor Blue Sapphire is exactly cheap.

There are many jewelry designers who advise subsituting blue sapphire with Tanzanite to control the price of the jewel. This is an acceptable idea if all you are interested in, is the color of the gemstone. However if you are a genuine sapphire lover then the idea of substitution would surely not appeal to you.

The Tanzanite gemstone measures 6.5-7 on the Moh's scale of hardness. This is quite hard, but sapphires measure up a majestic 9 on the same scale. Infact rubies and sapphires come only second in hardness when compared to diamonds. Diamonds have a 10 rating as far as hardness is concerned.

So use your judgement when deciding on the best gemstone for your jewelry. When looking at Tanzanite also consider Iolite, Kayanite and Blue Sapphires. Then put the prices against your budget and make a well informed choice.
