Let Love And Friendship Reign Forever, Never To Be Separated

The Claddagh history is really all about the origins of the Claddagh ring. Rarely in history is a jewel as meaningful as the Claddagh ring found. The story of the Claddagh ring takes us to a small fishing village in Ireland.

The history of Claddagh rings is traced back to Irish folk lore. Over 300 years ago, Algerian pirates captured a fishing boat from the Irish Claddagh village. As was common in those days, the crew from this captured boat was sold into slavery. This event proved to be heart breaking for one of the slaves named Richard Joyce. He was due to be married shortly and found himself far away from the one he loved and also far away from his country.

Richard Joyce was sold to a rich Moorish goldsmith and quickly learnt the trade. His skills developed in a short while and he designed a ring with immense significance. The ring was the Claddagh ring and also referred to as the 'faith ring'. The ring signified love, friendship and loyalty. This is the most popular explanation provided for the history of the Claddagh ring.

There are two versions of how Richard Joyce actually returned back to Claddagh. One belief is that Richard managed to escape from the bonds of slavery and returned to Claddagh. The second belief is that he was released when Willliam III of England demanded that all slaves be released. It is also told that the rich Moorish goldsmith offered Richard half his wealth and his only daughter in marriage.

Richard Joyce however, loved his sweetheart and returned back to her. With him was the now famous Claddagh ring that he crafted during his tenure as a slave. The two were soon married and the Claddagh ring got a history that was rich in meaning and tradition.

The Claddagh ring has a special significance in today's world. The true meaning of the claddagh ring implies love (the heart), friendship (the clasped hands) and loyalty (the crown). Click Here For a detailed report on the meaning and significance of the Irish Claddagh ring.
