History: According to Irish folklore, the first Cladagh ring was made by an Irish slave for his beloved. Cladagh is the name of a small fishing village in Ireland, however the beautiful landscape of this village has now changed with modernisation. The first Cladagh ring is believed to have been made over 300 years ago.

Meaning: Cladagh rings have a heart in the center that signify love, the hands clasping the heart stand for friendship and the crown on top of the heart shows loyalty. The Cladagh ring belongs to a group of rings that are referred to as the 'faith rings'. Because of the hands and the heart, Cladagh rings are also referred to as the 'hands and heart rings'.

Design Variations: Over the years, Cladagh rings have been designed with minor variations, however the original ring design (also retained in kaisilver claddagh rings) has retained it's tremendous popularity. In one variation of the Irish Cladagh ring, the crown has been excluded from the design. There was another variation that surfaced around a hundred years ago where two hearts were used in the center. This ring was referred to as the 'double heart ring'.

Wedding Ring: Cladagh rings are the most popular wedding rings in Ireland. Traditionally the mother passes her Cladagh ring to her daughter on the daughter's wedding day. Due to the significance and meaning of the Cladagh ring, this ring is now being increasingly adopted as a wedding or engagement ring in many countries far away from Ireland too.

Other Names: The Cladagh ring is also referred to by a few other names. Most of these names come from the features or meaning of Cladagh rings. For example, the 'clasped hands ring' or the 'hands and heart ring'. The ring is also referred to as one of the 'faith rings'. There was a design variation of the Cladagh ring with two hearts in the center and this gave the ring the name 'double heart ring'.
