The increase in availability and demand for color diamonds is impressive, however make sure that you understand the related issues when paying for your colored diamond ring or other jewelry. Given the fact that more than 95% of the diamonds mined are of the white (colorless) type, natural diamond colors like yellow, pink, green or blue are rarely seen. After making this statement, we do expect a few strange stares since, the supply of colored diamonds seems to have increased in recent years. The point is that  we said natural color diamonds and not all colored diamonds.

If you had to go by volume, it could be safely said that most of the colored diamonds seen today are treated for color enhancement. On the other hand, when we talk about natural color diamonds we mean that, these diamonds had that color right from the moment that they were mined. Technically, these two types of color diamonds are referred to as diamonds with natural color and diamonds with enhanced color. If you type about the diamonds, both are natural in that they are both mined and not man made. What is the difference is the source of the color on the diamonds. You could therefore have a pink diamond that was naturally pink and not treated in any way. At the same time it is possible to have a color enhanced pink diamond too. In the case of the color enhanced diamond, a white diamond or a diamond with some blemish in the color, is treated to change it's color.

Let us not get into details about how the treatment to enhance diamond color is done but, suffice it to say that these treatments enhance the beauty and value of the stone. Having said that, we would like to say that if you had to compare two pink diamonds of the same size, shape, weight, cut and clarity - the diamond that was naturally pink will be more valuable as compared to the diamond that was treated to get the pink color. Similarly, if you took a high grade white (colorless) diamond and enhanced it to a lovely blue, the value of the stone would be much less than the untreated white diamond. It is interesting to see how diamonds are selected to be treated for color enhanced diamond. Making a wrong selection could actually lower the price of the stone - so diamond manufacturers need to be careful in the selection.

Here is a brief insight into the diamond selection for the color enhancement process. Ideally diamonds with a flaw in color but, fairly clean are suitable for making lighter color diamonds. Pink, yellow and lighter shades of blue and green could be made with such diamonds. You might come across enhanced color diamonds with darker colors like dark green, dark blue, dark brown and even black. If you observe these diamonds, it is quite possible that the diamonds have a higher degree of internal inclusions and flaws. The point is that the dark color of these diamonds, makes internal flaws less visible. This is very apparent in the case of treated black diamonds, where the diamonds are often fully opaque. Since the quality of the diamonds used to make darker shades of diamonds is not too high, prices of darker treated colored diamonds is also lower than lighter diamond colors.

We often receive queries related to treated colored diamonds, buyers want to know whether enhanced colored diamonds are good. We would make a few observations here, please make sure that you carefully read and understand them. Firstly, treated color diamonds are made from naturally mined diamonds, they are not factory produced or simulant diamonds. The treatments applied to change the color of natural diamonds, do not weaken the diamond physically, so the high degree of hardness that comes naturally to diamonds remains intact for color ehanced diamonds too. Given that the price of color enhanced diamonds is cheaper than their naturally colored counterparts, treated colored diamonds come as a blessing for buyers looking for moderately priced colored diamond jewelry.

Here is some important information related to the purchase and pricing of colored diamonds. If you plan to get some diamond jewelry with colored diamonds, it is the duty of the jeweler to inform you whether the diamond colors are natural or treated. Remember that treated color diamonds should be cheaper than, similar diamonds that have natural color. Many jewelers do not openly inform buyers about the type of color diamonds used but, they might be willing to disclose details if you show that you know something about natural and treated colored diamonds. This is the objective of writing this report, we would like to equip you with information and allow you to make a well informed decision. To begin with, evaluate various jewlers and work with a reputed provider who makes you feel comfortable.

Let us now say a few things about testing diamonds, to be sure of their authenticity and also the type of color that appears on them. There is an interesting thing about color treated diamonds and diamond testing. Prior to the years 2002-2003, many gem and diamond testing laboratories could not definitely identify the source of color on a diamond. This was the time when the color enhancement processes for diamonds were first implemented. However things have changed now and major testing laboratories can clearly state the difference between natural and enhanced color diamonds. There is one issue though and this relates to testing charges. A special detailed testing report is required to identify the source of color in colored diamonds, these reports can cost in the range of 75 U.S$ to 200 U.S$ per diamond piece tested. If you were talking about 3mm or smaller colored diamonds, the testing fee could be more than the cost of the diamond itself! So in most cases, expecting the final consumer to pay for diamond color testing, is not very feasible. We come back to our suggestion of, choosing and evaluating a jeweler before making a purchase.
